ISB&Index

Background

(Pierke) I.S. Bosschieter, freelance indexer

I started my working life in the public health service. In need of change, I studied library and information science and worked for several years as an archivist. Food and cooking have always been my great passion, so when an opportunity arose to start a vegetarian catering business with a friend, I jumped at the offer. When after a few years of catering the work proved to be too strenuous, I had to search for a more sedate means of support. A lifelong avid reader, I at last found my métier in indexing. My subject specialisms are the humanities and, of course, food-related subjects.

As one of the editors of The Indexer I publish about indexing on a regular basis. (see: Publications).

Besides coaching beginning indexers and authors who want to index their own publications, I also give workshops on indexing for technical writers, publishers and editors.

In 2011, I received the Wheatley Medal for my collaboration with Caroline Diepeveen and Jacqueline Pitchford on the compiling of the index for The Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World (Brill, 2010). Read more about this on the website of the Society of Indexers or in een article in The Times Literary Supplement.
